The people who work for us are seriously top notch humans, and we’re excited to introduce you to them in this column of barista profiles. Meet Maddie B.: hailing from Milwaukee, she is a marketing major at Temple's Fox School of Business. At 20 years old, she's one of our youngest baristas but actually has lots of experience, as she began working in coffee at age 17! She graduated high school a year early and began working as a barista at Stone Creek Coffee in Milwaukee to save up money for college. "I fell in love with coffee while working there. I learned a lot and took a lot of classes...their coffee is very good," she says. Maddie's passion for coffee is clear through her knowledge of the different single origin coffees on our Chemex menu, and her consistently solid latte art.
Maddie is the oldest of 6, a role which she says helped to define her personality. "I took on a lot of responsibility from a very young age. I started babysitting my siblings when I was 10!" she says. She was also home schooled through 7th grade, which she says gave her an amazing head start when it came to reading, writing and math, and instilled in her a love of learning. While she is friendly and kind, there is a serious edge to Maddie. She takes work and school seriously, and has major plans for the future.
"I’m not the kind of person who wants to be in school forever. I want to get my degree and I want to go and start doing things," she says. Communication is her biggest strength, and she would like to become a social media expert, helping to promote non-profits. Then one day, she says, she'll set her sights on the political arena. "People laugh when I say I want to be the President," she says. "What they don't realize is that I'm serious."
When it comes to hobbies and passions outside of school and work, Maddie teaches Irish dance at home in Milwaukee. She danced for 10 years, and still loves teaching. She also plays the Irish whistle, which she says is like a recorder without the hole in the back. Her whole family is pretty involved in Irish culture: many of her siblings dance and play Irish music as well, and her mom designs and sews Irish dance dresses. Maddie manages the blog and social media her mom's business, Heidi Bird Designs.
More recently, Maddie has been dabbling in photography (check out her Tumblr!), mostly focusing on landscapes and architecture. "Photography is a way for me to go out and do things, to leave my house and not watch TV and explore different parts of the city," she says. "I like to ride my bike and take pictures of stuff."
When it comes to working in coffee, Maddie says the best part is the people. "I’m very much a people person. I enjoy interacting with people, and coffee is the perfect way to do that," she says. "And of course I like drinking coffee!" Her favorite coffees are the Guatemalan single origins from Stumptown that we've had on our Chemex menu, as she says she's more into chocolaty notes than fruity ones.
As for working at HubBub, she says: "I love working here...everyone is so nice! The shop I worked at in Milwaukee, I really liked working there but there were nine locations and I never interacted with people from other stores. Here it’s more of a close-knit family. Drew is amazing about learning about everyone and asking how everyone is. That’s huge to me."
Maddie is a super valuable and talented part of our barista team. We can't wait to see what she accomplishes in the future!
