hubbub presents cropped

When we saw how inviting and good-vibe-ful (yes, we coin our own words sometimes) the Spruce Street HubBub was shaping up to be, we knew we had to put the space to good use. After all, what's the point of having a café to call your own if you don't make fun stuff happen in it?

And so, we are superbly excited to announce our first show (of the musical variety), hosted at 3736 Spruce, as part of the HubBub Presents concert series! We're a pretty music obsessed group, us HubBub people, so welcoming musicians into our home just feels so in line with what we're about.

This Sunday, November 10th, three talented bands will perform. Mellow stuff, yes, but interesting, too, with guitar chops and vocal complexity that will warm you up on a chilly November eve. There's The Sun Flights, a Philly-based duo, who layers lady harmonies over acoustic guitar strums. Kind of a Neko Case feel, tinged with an old-timey country sweetness - the kind of tunes that makes you want to drive around back roads until you find some beat up diner where you can order a milkshake and a piece of pie.

The Dirty Dirges are a four-piece bluegrass-inspired band on the road from Allston, Mass. They do woozy, boozy, "bleary eyed country" (as they call it). Banjo, guitar and...clarinet?! with sometimes gruff, sometimes smooth vocals are intertwined like the laces on an old pair of work boots. There is a dark edge to their songs, a slightly unhinged weirdness. We mean that in the best way.

Heading up the show is Kyle Simmons AKA Boog, a 23 year old singer/songwriter from Pottstown, PA. This highly prolific dude plays a lo-fi kind of country music, with a lot of soul but a good amount of grit, too.  He has so many albums up on Bandcamp, but we are partial to the 2012 release "Regency," a reverb heavy set of five thoughtful songs with poetic lyrics. It's got pretty a pretty great album cover, too. Not sure if it's on purpose, but the photo's got sort of a 90's grunge thing going on:

But enough talk! No amount of writing will take the place of seeing these bands live. So round up a couple friends, and join us on Sunday at HubBub for a special evening of great music. More details on the Facebook event page. See you soon!
